Salary figures for CFA charterholders are often quoted as one big average. That number hides the most important point: charterholders work in very different jobs, and the job decides the pay. This guide breaks pay down by role and country, then looks at the question that matters before you commit: will the CFA pay you back?
CFA salary by role
These are approximate median base salaries from CFA Institute's global compensation study of its members. They exclude bonuses, which in investment roles can be a large part of total pay.
| Role | Median base salary (approx.) |
|---|---|
| Chief investment officer | $250,000 |
| Portfolio manager | $160,000 |
| Consultant | $150,000 |
| Risk manager | $150,000 |
| Relationship manager | $150,000 |
| Research, investment or quantitative analyst | $140,000 |
| Financial planner | $140,000 |
Members who take part in the survey are typically experienced and many are based in the US, so treat these as figures for established professionals, not first jobs.
CFA salary by country
Pay differs sharply by market. The ranges below are indicative total compensation (base plus typical bonus) for charterholders, drawn from salary guides and compensation surveys. They vary a lot by city, employer and specialism.
| Country | Early career (0–3 yrs) | Mid career (4–8 yrs) | Senior (9+ yrs) |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | $85k–$120k | $120k–$200k | $250k–$500k+ |
| United Kingdom | £55k–£80k | £80k–£150k | £200k–£400k |
| UAE | AED 200k–290k | AED 300k–720k | AED 720k–1.5m+ |
| Singapore | SGD 80k–120k | SGD 120k–220k | SGD 260k–450k |

| India | ₹8–14 lakh | ₹18–32 lakh | ₹35–65 lakh |
Compare after tax and living costs. UAE salaries are generally free of personal income tax, while London and New York carry high taxes and housing costs. A lower headline figure can leave you with more money each month.
Does passing Level I alone raise your salary?
This is one of the most common questions, and the honest answer is: rarely by itself. Employers pay for the role you hold, not for a passed exam. What Level I can do is help you get into a role that pays more.
- Students and graduates: "CFA Level I passed" on a CV can help you stand out for analyst internships and graduate programmes in asset management and research.
- People already in investment roles: passing levels shows commitment and can support a promotion case, but raises usually come with the next title, not the result.
- People outside investment management: a passed level adds little to pay unless you use it to move into an investment job.
When does the CFA pay back its cost?
A typical candidate spends around $5,000 to $8,000 on the full programme including prep and one retake. Whether that is a good investment depends on how much more you expect to earn because of it. Use the calculator to test your own numbers.

Simple estimate: ignores pay growth, bonuses and the value of your study time. The default cost matches the "typical" budget in our CFA cost guide.
The hidden cost is time. Around 900 study hours across three levels is roughly 18 months of evenings and weekends. If the charter does not open a door you actually want, that time may be better spent on a credential closer to your target job, such as the FRM for risk or the CMA for corporate finance.
Where CFA holders tend to earn the most
- Buy-side investment roles: portfolio management at asset managers, pension funds and insurers, where bonuses tie to performance.
- Leadership tracks: heads of research and chief investment officers sit at the top of the pay scale.
- Major financial centres: New York, London, Singapore, Hong Kong and Dubai pay the highest absolute salaries.
- Specialist niches: quantitative, risk and private markets roles often combine the CFA with technical or sector skills that push pay higher.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a CFA charterholder earn on average?
CFA Institute's compensation data shows median base salaries of roughly $140,000 to $160,000 for core roles such as research analyst and portfolio manager, with senior roles such as chief investment officer around $250,000. Bonuses can add significantly to these figures.
Does passing CFA Level I increase your salary?
Rarely on its own. Passing Level I can help you get interviews for entry-level investment roles, but employers usually pay for the job you do rather than for a passed level. The bigger salary effect comes when the CFA helps you move into a higher-paying role.
Which country pays CFA charterholders the most?
In absolute terms, the United States and major financial centres such as London, Singapore and Dubai offer the highest pay. The UAE is notable because salaries there are generally not subject to personal income tax.
Is the CFA worth it financially?
For people working in or moving into investment management, research or institutional finance, the cost of a few thousand dollars is often recovered within one to three years if the charter helps secure a promotion or a move. In roles that do not value it, the financial return is much weaker.
Do CFA charterholders earn more than MBA graduates?
It depends on the role and school. Top MBA programmes lead to high starting salaries but cost far more. The CFA is cheaper and more specialised, so the comparison is really about which path suits the job you want.
