The CFA Program has no single price tag. What you pay depends on when you register, how you prepare and whether you pass each level first time. This guide shows every cost CFA Institute charges in 2026, the typical spend on prep, and what happens to your budget if a level goes wrong.

CFA exam fees in 2026, level by level

From the February 2026 exams, CFA Institute removed the one-time $350 enrolment fee and folded the cost into higher registration fees. Each level has two price points, and the only difference between them is when you pay.

LevelEarly registrationStandard registrationSaving if early
Level I$1,140$1,490$350
Level II$1,140$1,490$350
Level III$1,240$1,590$350
All three$3,520$4,570$1,050

Registration includes the official curriculum and CFA Institute's online study tools for that level. Fees are not refundable, and changing your exam appointment within the same window costs $250.

What a realistic all-in budget looks like

Fees are only part of the picture. The table below shows three common candidate profiles, assuming one prep package per level.

For context, Kaplan Schweser lists its Level I packages from $429 to $1,499, and other providers sit below and above that range. Many candidates who pass at the first attempt rely mainly on the official curriculum plus a question bank, which keeps prep spending low.

How much a failed level really adds

A retake is the most expensive surprise in a CFA budget, because you pay the full registration fee again. Failing one level adds between $1,140 and $1,590 in fees alone. Add new practice exams or a refresher course and the real cost is often $1,300 to $2,000.

There is also a time cost. Level III runs only in February and August, so a failed Level III attempt can push your charter back by six months. Level II is the level most candidates describe as the hardest step, so it is the one worth over-preparing for.

Rule of thumb: if you are working full time, budget for one retake even if you hope not to need it. If you pass first time, treat the money as savings.

Is a paid prep course worth it if your employer won't pay?

This depends less on the course and more on how you learn. A paid course is most useful if you need structure: a schedule, video lessons and a mock exam timetable. If you are disciplined with reading and practice questions, the official curriculum and practice tools included with registration cover the syllabus.

A practical approach is to start Level I with the official materials only, then buy a question bank or mock exams in the final six weeks if your practice scores are below where you want them. That puts money where it changes your result.

Costs after you pass all three levels

  • CFA Institute membership: $299 a year for charterholders, with reduced rates in some markets. Membership is needed to use the CFA designation.
  • Local society dues: most CFA societies charge separately, and amounts vary by city and country.
  • Continuing education: CFA Institute provides much of it free to members, but conferences and courses can add cost.

Ways candidates cut the cost

  1. Always register early. It saves $350 per level, $1,050 in total.
  2. Ask your employer first. Many banks and asset managers reimburse registration and prep fees, sometimes only after you pass.
  3. Apply for an Access Scholarship. For scholarships awarded from 4 March 2026, the registration fee drops to $400. It is based on financial need, is valid for one exam cycle, and has its own application window before each exam.
  4. Buy prep in stages. Start with official materials and add paid tools only where your practice results show gaps.
  5. Avoid rescheduling. Choose your window and test date carefully, since every change costs $250.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest possible way to complete the CFA?

Register early for every level, pass each level at the first attempt and study only with the curriculum and practice tools included in your registration. That keeps the total at $3,520 in CFA Institute fees. An Access Scholarship can cut a single level's registration to $400.

Is the CFA curriculum included in the exam fee?

Yes. Registration includes access to the official curriculum and CFA Institute's online learning tools for that level. Third-party prep courses are optional and paid separately.

How much does it cost to retake a CFA level?

A retake costs the full registration fee again: $1,140 to $1,590 depending on the level and how early you register. Many candidates also buy extra practice material for a retake, so budget a few hundred dollars more.

Do I pay anything after passing all three levels?

To use the charter you must become a CFA Institute member. Annual dues are $299 for charterholders, with reduced rates in some countries, and most local CFA societies charge their own separate dues.

Can I get a refund if I cannot sit the exam?

CFA Institute does not refund registration or rescheduling fees. Moving to a different date in the same window carries a $250 fee, so pick your window carefully before paying.
